The M.D. Anderson Cancer Center is one of the world’s most respected cancer centers as well as one of the world’s largest healthcare facilities. The Sundial at Clark Clinic is a key landmark in a new wayfinding system designed by fd2s Integrated Wayfinding Solutions.Technique Architectural Products fabricated the Sundial working closely with the Pittsburgh branch of Derse Exhibits. The sundial incorporates multiple materials and techniques including two different elements of lighting. The mast and drum are made of steel for strength and rigidity. Above that is clear glass with sand-blasted Roman numerals, edge-lit by blue LEDs located within the drum. Above the glass are the main graphic elements of the design. The sundial and the compass discs were made by machining the surface with a CNC router and filling the low parts with a contrasting paint. Frosted acrylic inserts in the discs diffuse the white LED light from below and illuminate the surface. The gnomon was created by laser cutting several pieces of aluminum in the flat, hand shaping, TIG welding the seams, and grinding smooth. The base plate was made of solid 6061 aluminum turned on a lathe to create the subtle taper.
